approach & philosophy

I understand that every person has their own set of unique struggles and circumstances, and so I treat each person as an individual. Some people come to therapy with a specific problem they would like to address in the present, some people choose to work out unresolved issues from their past, and some people prefer to incorporate both their present and their past in addressing the issues that bring them to therapy. It is my approach to listen to the individual's needs and wants in determining the goals and path towards those goals in therapy.

I typically take an eclectic approach in the therapeutic process. I may use one or a combination of the following approaches to therapy:

  • Cognitive-Behavioral: Focuses on skills building, and learning new ways to think and behave through practice and homework.
  • Psychodynamic: Understanding current behavior from past experiences. Therapy may therefore consist of an in-depth look at how your past has affected your present, and we may use insight as a basis for change.
  • Existential: Focuses on your understanding of experiences and why things occur. This understanding ties into your relationships with others.
  • Mindfulness: Focuses on reducing negative emotions and improve coping skills by helping you to live and be happy in the here & now.

Therapy consists of you & I discussing your difficulties and working out the best approach to solve these problems. If you have any questions regarding the therapeutic process, or if I am the right therapist for you, please feel free to call me at (619) 787-4406.
